I love my mother to death but there are a million things about her that drive me crazy. One of the most irritating of those things is the fact that she talks down to people a lot of the time. She doesn’t do it on purpose and she’ll deny it if you call her out on it but it happens every time that she is working with someone who is in a service-providing position.

For example, she was recently looking to buy a new home for sale in Florida or to get the assistance of Florida home builders to build her a custom home. She interviewed both custom home builders in panama city and custom home builders in orlando while I was with her. She also met with a real estate agent. And she talked down to all of these people, coming across as bossy and rude.

When she excused herself to the bathroom at the real estate agent’s office, I apologized for her behavior. "Mothers!" I said and the woman and I both laughed. But the truth is that I was actually really uncomfortable about the situation. And I think it’s because I know that our mothers set an example for our own behavior which makes me worry that I act the same way without realizing that I’m doing it. After all, she doesn’t think she’s doing it.
