Flat Sharing The Easy Way

Do you need to find a flatmate for a flatshare? If so, you’re probably struggling with questions about what kind of flatmate you want. You might also be wondering what flat rules you’ll want to put into place to make sure that sharing a flat with a stranger goes smoothly. Here are some tips to do flat sharing the easy way so that it can be a positive experience instead of a difficult one:

  • Decide in advance about the qualities that a flatmate must have. This will help you to narrow down your search.
  • Determine if you’re going to look for rooms for rent together or if you’ll get the flat on your own and then look for a flatmate.
  • Set some ground rules about how rent will be paid each month, how utilities will be split and what other bills you want to share at the flat.
  • Set some ground rules about overnight guests, sharing food and other common courtesies about being roommates.
  • Adopt the practice of being extra respectful of your flatmate’s privacy and possessions.
  • At the same time, choose to be forgiving of lapses in respect by your flatmate. This laidback attitude will go a long way towards making things go smoothly in your shared flat.

Sharing space with another person can be difficult. However, if you lay down some rules and respect each other, it can also be a terrific experience.
