How I Use Concrete for Artwork

The city uses concrete to build sidewalks. Businesses use concrete to help build their buildings. I use concrete to create art.

Concrete is a solid, heavy material, so I try to use that heavy material to create something calm and more serene. I think there is art in contradiction and I try to create that in my artwork.

For example, I created a block of concrete and used the concrete saws to create waves, making the giant block look more like the waves of an ocean. Water gives a much softer appearance than concrete does.

Similarly, using various concrete tools I was able to make a perfect circle. Circles, unlike other shapes, have no sharp edges, making it smoother in both appearance and touch.
Finally, I tried an experiment where I added soft colors into the concrete and used concrete mixers to create a colored square, but the square was filled with different shapes and lines from the different colors I used. I sanded it down and it appeared much more beautiful than the material it was created from.

I think this kind of art – creating beauty from something that is not inherently beautiful – is some of the most interesting and intriguing sculpture available. That is why I enjoy adding to it, and hope to continue to do so for years.
