Are You a Candidate for an Online Degree?

With the advent of the Internet, many doors have been opened up in the world of education.  As a result, online degrees have become quite popular in recent years.  Now, instead of attending classes at the same time every day or evening, interrupting your busy day or having to schedule around your school hours, you can attend class by visiting a website at any time of the day or night.

This sounds great to just about anyone who wants an education but has faced difficulties in getting one.  But are you sure that you are a candidate for an online degree?

The ideal online student should be:

  • Self-motivated.  Some degree of self-motivation is necessary in any degree program, because even in traditional campus classes teachers don’t hold your hand and make sure you do your work, but with an online college setting it’s even more important.  Less contact with your teachers and classmates means that it’s harder for many people to remember to do their work.
  • Good at scheduling.  It’s a lot harder to remember to log on to your class than it is to show up at the same time every day or week.  No one is going to remind you, so you need to be able to do this yourself.
  • Computer savvy.  Often, online teachers will assign projects that require computer or Internet work.  Also, some virtual classroom programs are a little confusing to navigate at first.  If you are good with computers and the Internet, it’ll make your experience that much easier.

Online education is a possibility for many people, but unless you have what it could takes, you could fail — and then you’d be out a lot of money and time, not to mention disappointed that you didn’t meet your goal of getting your degree!  While I believe that anyone can get an education if they put their mind to it, online education does require that the student has the discipline in order to make themself put their mind to it!
