I remember my first voting experience. It was probably much similar to the experiences people had been having for decades. My polling place was in the local high school, which was huge, dark, and rather dungeon-like, being an old school. We walked in the front door and then followed lots of signs to a large hallway where the voting stuff was set up. There were temporary fence panels and other crowd control barriers to keep us out of parts of the school where we weren’t supposed to go, and a post & rope setup to keep us in line. It felt kind of like we were cattle, and they were herding us.
Now voting is much different. I am permanently registered in my state for mail in ballots, and having now voted in two or three elections that way, I have to say that I love it! I get my ballot in the mail with several weeks to look it over and make my selections. I can look candidates or bills up on the Internet and cast my vote right then and there, once I’ve researched it to my satisfaction. I can drop my completed ballot off at any time up until the polls close on voting day. And best of all, I don’t have to go through any of that cattle-herding nonsense!
Mail in ballots are pretty popular, so it’s not just me. The vast majority of Coloradoans voted by mail in ballots in the last election. What about you? How do you feel about the changes in voting, and have you changed along with it?
There is absolutely nothing as exciting as waiting for a mail package, is there? Come home, look to the front doorstep, the thrill of the anticipation before you get the package in your hands. Then when it finally does arrive you rip it open with absolute abandon and (if you’re me) make a self satisfying gripe about how their packaging is unnecessarily bulky and not ecologically friendly. Then when you finally get to the item itself, it’s bliss. My bliss is coming in the form of a photo blanket, custom pillows and some teen bedding. There are photos on all of it. We can be curled up with family photos, resting our heads on pictures of our heads! It’s a little weird and redundant, but it’s just so cool! I can’t wait! I had all these photos and I didn’t know what to do with them; it’s always so hard to find the time to sit down and make a scrap book, or do some crafty project that everyone is going to look and roll their eyes (and possibly groan “Mooom, really?”). This was a really great way to get some of our favorite photos in an active position in our home without having to dust another frame! I can’t wait to see the finished products.
